Is Stunned Meat Halal?

Quick answer Scholars differ

Scholars differ. Many accept meat from animals stunned in a reversible way, as long as the animal is still alive at the moment of slaughter and the Islamic conditions are met. Others reject all stunning because some animals may die from it. In the UK, HFA accepts some reversible stunning, while HMC accepts no stunning.

Why it matters

Islamic slaughter requires the animal to be alive when its throat is cut. If stunning kills an animal before slaughter, it becomes carrion (maytah), which is haram.

View 1: reversible stunning is acceptable

Many scholars and certifiers accept low-voltage electrical stunning (or similar) that only makes the animal unconscious and from which it would recover. The HFA certifies on this basis in the UK.

View 2: no stunning

Others hold that stunning risks killing some animals, causes its own harm, and is not needed. HMC in the UK, HFSAA in the US and AVS in France accept no stunning.
