The principle of necessity
The Qur'an allows what is otherwise forbidden in genuine need (2:173). Scholars apply this to medicines that have no halal alternative.
Transformation
Some scholars hold that gelatine made from pig skin or bone is chemically transformed, so it is no longer pork (istihalah). Others disagree.
What to do
- Ask your GP or pharmacist for a vegetarian or fish-gelatine version.
- Look for "HPMC" or "vegetable capsule" on supplements.
- Never stop necessary medication without speaking to a doctor.
