Is It Halal to Invest in Gold?

Quick answer It depends

Buying physical gold and taking possession of it is halal. Because gold is a "ribawi" item, Islamic law requires the exchange to be immediate. Gold ETFs are accepted by many scholars only if they are fully backed by allocated physical gold; leveraged XAUUSD trading through CFDs is widely considered haram.

Physical gold

Buying gold coins or bars is a permitted investment. Gold and silver have special rules: when exchanged for money, the exchange must be hand to hand — immediate, with no delay in delivery or payment.

Gold ETFs and digital gold

Many scholars accept gold products where every unit is backed by specific, allocated physical gold that you own. Some funds are certified Shariah-compliant for this reason. Unbacked or "synthetic" gold products are not.

XAUUSD and forex-style gold trading

Trading XAUUSD on most retail platforms means CFDs with leverage and overnight fees, where you never own gold. Most scholars consider this impermissible. "Swap-free" accounts remove overnight interest but not the other issues.
