Is Smoking or Vaping Haram?

Quick answer Haram

Most contemporary scholars say smoking cigarettes is haram because of the proven serious harm to health, and some earlier scholars considered it disliked (makruh). Vaping and shisha are also prohibited or strongly discouraged by most scholars because of nicotine addiction and health harm. Cannabis is haram as an intoxicant.

Why smoking is prohibited

The Qur'an says "do not throw yourselves into destruction" (2:195), and the Prophet ﷺ said "there should be no harm and no reciprocating harm". Modern medical evidence on smoking led most scholars and fatwa bodies to rule it haram.

Vaping and shisha

Many scholars apply the same reasoning to vaping and shisha, which deliver nicotine and harmful substances. Some consider nicotine-free vapes disliked rather than forbidden.

Cannabis

Cannabis intoxicates, so it falls under the prohibition of intoxicants. CBD without THC is debated.
