Is Mozzarella Halal?

Mozzarella is halal when it is made with microbial (vegetarian) rennet or acid, which is true of most supermarket mozzarella labelled "suitable for vegetarians". Mozzarella made with animal rennet from non-halal calves is doubtful or not halal, depending on the school.

Rennet decides it

Cheese is set with rennet. Microbial rennet is halal. Animal rennet is halal only if it comes from a calf slaughtered Islamically; the Hanafi school is more lenient on rennet than the others.

How to tell

  • "Suitable for vegetarians" — no animal rennet.
  • A halal logo — certified.
  • Just "rennet" or "enzymes" — doubtful.
