Muslim men
Marriage to a Jewish or Christian woman is permitted by the Qur'an. Many contemporary scholars advise caution because of the effect on children's faith and the laws of the country.
Muslim women
Scholars agree a Muslim woman may only marry a Muslim man. If her partner genuinely embraces Islam, the marriage may take place.
Cousin marriage
Marrying a first cousin is permitted in Islam; the Prophet ﷺ married his cousin Zaynab bint Jahsh. Some families seek genetic counselling.
