Is Dropshipping Halal?

Quick answer It depends

Dropshipping can be halal if structured correctly. The concern is selling something you do not yet own, which a hadith forbids. Scholars say it becomes permissible if you act as the supplier's agent for a commission, take a pre-order and then buy, or use a salam-style arrangement — and of course the products themselves must be halal.

The issue

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not sell what you do not have." In classic dropshipping, you sell an item before you own it, which many scholars say breaks this rule.

Halal ways to do it

  • Agency (wakala): you sell on behalf of the supplier and earn a fee or commission.
  • Affiliate model: you refer customers and earn commission.
  • Buy first: you purchase the item (taking constructive possession) before selling it on.

Other conditions

Be honest about delivery times and product quality, and do not sell haram products.
